Keys to Networking

Keys to Networking

Have you ever heard of a business networking event? If no, a business networking event is a low-cost marketing method to build new business contacts through connecting with other like-minded individuals face to face. These events are generally held by organizations or professional business networking groups. I've recently attended my first networking event by myself and I will admit, I need to work on my networking skills. I was not prepared! I was so nervous about going by myself that I totally disregarded the sole purpose of going, which was to NETWORK WITH A PURPOSE. I did make a few connections but I know I could have done so much better if I was prepared. Business networking is more than just showing up and handing out your business cards. It's about gaining valuable contacts, meeting new like-minded individuals, sharing who you are, and what you do.

Here are 6 key tips for your next networking event.

Have a Purpose

Before attending the event, ask yourself, " why are you going?" To find prospective clients? To meet certain people? To acquire a resource you need? A new job opportunity? To reconnect with old friends? Once you know your purpose for attending, create a game plan and you will be able to make the most of the event.

Dress to Impress

Dress for success. Select an outfit that is professional. Business casual is the go to for most business networking events. If you want to stand out, dress more fashion-forward than you would in the office. Have a little fun with your clothes and put more of your personality into your outfit. Pick an outfit that is comfortable, that makes you feel good and exude confidence.

Introduce Yourself

Introduce yourself by making eye contact, smiling, stating your first and last name, and giving a firm handshake. State what you do, with 2-3 sentences and avoid industry jargon. Don't overly talk about yourself and your company. Also, be approachable by having an "open" posture (arms /legs uncrossed and head up). When meeting new people, listen for their name and then say it during the conversation. This helps you to remember their name, it appears sincere, and that you are interested in the conversation.

Bring Business Cards

This key is very simple and a no-brainer. But, bring more cards than you think you'll need. Be professional and have your business cards in a card case. The case is a quick way to get to your cards and it also prevents them from bending or getting dirty.

Listen/Show Interest/Ask Questions

Most people at business networking events are talkers. So, this key is very simple as well, just LISTEN. Be a thoughtful listener and never interrupt the other person. By being an active and patient listener, it shows respect and your attention. Asking the person about their background and work shows that you are interested. Also, the best questions for a networking event are open-ended questions.

After the Event

Follow Up

Follow -up with any one you met and that you'd like to continue networking with. Follow- up within 24-72 hours. Do something to maintain the connection such as: emailing the person letting them know you enjoyed your conversation with them, add them to your LinkedIn or Facebook, invite them out for coffee. Whatever you prefer, keep the connection alive!
