Easy Moving And Packing Tips

Easy Moving And Packing Tips

Congratulations on purchasing your new home! The key to having a successful and smooth move is preparation. Not sure where to begin? Well here are a few tips and tricks I put together to help you get started!

1. Pack Ahead

Start packing little by little, as early as a few weeks or a few months out. Start packing things you know you will not be using such as pictures, books, and off-season clothing.

2. Get Rid Of Everything

LOL Okay, maybe not everything! But, the more unnecessary and unused items you eliminate from your home, the less stuff you'll have to pack up. Doing a purge will have the biggest impact on your packing process.

3. Donate/Sell

Donate your old clothes, books, furniture, toys, and more to your favorite charity. Also, set aside stuff to sell. You might have a few items you no longer want but believe it's worth money, set them aside and determine where you can sell them. Here a few options, AptDeco,eBay, Craigslist, local consignment store, Plato's Closet and so many other places.

4. Change Your Address

Change your address ahead of time so your bills, credit card statements, and packages can arrive on time and without hassle.

5. Schedule Disconnect Times

Contact your cable, electricity, internet and gas providers at least a week ahead of your move to figure out when you need to shut everything off.

6. Label Moving Boxes

This is the key to finding yourself easily. When stacking boxes in a van or car you won't be able to see their tops, so make sure you label the sides as well. Label the boxes by category and by room to speed up the unloading process.

7. Protect Fragile Items

Protect fragile items with packing paper, bubble wrap, or blankets.  Use those items to pad all of your fragile dishware and decorative items. Make sure you wrap each of those items separately, so they're fully cushioned.

8. Take Pictures

Take pictures of the back of your electronics before you take them apart and pack them up. Those pictures will make it much easier to set up your TV or monitor as soon as you move in.

9. Overnight Bag

Pack a personal overnight bag because chances are you won't get everything unpacked in the first day.

10. Pack A Clear Plastic Container

Pack the container with things you'll need right away. This can include toilet paper, towels, sheets, snacks, or whatever else you'll need for your first night in your new home. Having a
few essential items will make you feel more prepared and comfortable when unpacking everything else.
